Bat Lag

One the problems i see from most of my students swings is bat lag to the ball. Bat lag is the position where the bat is prior to entering to the strike zone.

At bat lag your weight should be going into your front side and your hands should be out in the center of your gravity. The bat is mostly parallel to the ground. I always tell my students if your gonna use a hammer to hit a nail , wouldn't you hammer that nail out in front of you where your strong. This is where the term staying behind the ball comes in. The bat will release underneath the hands down the line of the pitch.

PRESEASON TEAM WORKOUTS

Sorry i haven't posted something in some time, i have been extremely busy with the baseball program that i coach . We are getting everyone together with workouts and conditioning. In this post I'm going to show you what an average week consists of for us in preseason.

MONDAY : weight room: core training/ shoulders/ arms/ back/ hand & forearm/

followed by run conditioning.

WEDNESDAY: core training/ few yoga flexibility moves/ lower body (weights and bands) /

form running/ agility drills and cone running.

FRIDAY : weight room: core training/ shoulders/ arms/ back/ lower body/ bleacher running

/ agility drills and jump rope/ watch videos and classroom teaching about baseball.

educate them about the game of baseball.

SATURDAY: running and conditioning (4 mile run) followed by 45 minute yoga class.

By installing this program our players at first struggle during preseason but during the grind of a long baseball season they have less injuries and find themselves better conditioned and united as a team.They take ownership of this workout plan and push everyone involved to not miss a day and not to slack. Believe me this early season workout will bring your team to the next level of performance.

1. BALANCE- start to finish

2. STAYING INSIDE THE BALL WITH YOUR HANDS (finish over the ball)

3. EXTENSION -short to the ball- then extend ( EXTENSION IS AFTER CONTACT)

4. HANDS AND HIPS GENERATE POWER - slow feet then fast hands!!!

5. 2 STRIKE HITTING

* THINGS I TEACH

* choke up physically and mentally

* inch or 2 closer to the plate, brings outside corner closer

* think hard up the middle- short quick swing

FOLLOWING THE PLANE OF THE PITCH

One thing I've been noticing lately with my students is that they are maintaining their balance , but they don't keep the bat on the plane of the pitch. If you don't maintain the swing on the plane (path) of the pitch you will leave very little room for error and lose allot of power. I'm going to include a video that shows players adjusting to the plane of the pitch. enjoy

Teaching Young Kids To Throw

One of the most important skill for a young student of the the game that's passed up, is the kids ability to have proper throwing mechanics. If you watch a little league game, you will surely see throwing errors or throws that are off target. Little league coaches don't spend a enough time on this skill.

The key to having proper throwing skills is to have your feet shoulder width apart and pointing at your throwing target. The front elbow must be pointing at your throwing target. (we like to think of it as a steering wheel) The back throwing elbow must be even or higher than your throwing shoulder. The reason why, is so we can applie speed and velocity towards our target. The wrist must be faced directly behind us to keep the throw nice and loose, the reason being as we rotate our chest towards the target our wrist will be in a natural position to stay behind the throw applying power. One thing to remember is, if the wrist is facing in or forward our rotation will automatically make the ball positioned on the side making us lose power and putting stress on our arm.
